How To Get Rid Of Green Algae In Your Pond

One of the most common questions we get on a weekly basis is how to prevent and control algea growth your pond. Below are some useful tips and solutions we are sure will help.

One of the most frustrating occurrences in our customers ponds is excessive blanket weed / algae growth. This can cause discoloured water and dense green mats of algae on the surface of the pond. This can become particularly troublesome in sunny, warm weather. Below are some helpful tips and suggestions to help prevent algae growth in your pond.

1. Manual Removal: Regularly remove string algae manually using a pond net. Gently pull out the algae from the pond, making sure to remove as much as possible. This method is suitable for small-scale infestations and can be used as a maintenance practice.

2. Introduce Pond Plants: Introduce and encourage the growth of aquatic plants such as water lilies, water hyacinths, and submerged plants. These plants compete with string algae for nutrients and sunlight, reducing its growth. Additionally, they provide shade and cover, limiting the availability of light for algae growth. Pond Hobby boasts one of the largest collections of pond plants in Ireland.

3. Water Circulation and Aeration: Improve water circulation and aeration in the pond. String algae thrives in stagnant water, so creating movement and adding oxygen can inhibit its growth. Install a pond aerator, fountain, or water feature to promote circulation and oxygenation.

4. Nutrient Management: String algae growth is often fueled by excess nutrients in the pond. Reduce nutrient inputs by minimizing overfeeding of fish and avoiding excessive use of fertilizers near the pond. This helps limit the availability of nutrients that algae needs to grow.

5. Barley Straw: Utilize barley straw or barley straw extracts in the pond. Barley straw releases natural compounds that help control the growth of string algae. Place a mesh bag filled with barley straw or use commercially available barley straw extracts according to the instructions provided.

6. UV Clarifiers & Filters: Consider installing a UV clarifier or filtration system in the pond. UV clarifiers use ultraviolet light to kill algae cells, including string algae. This method helps control algae growth and improve water clarity. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for proper installation and operation.

7. Treatments: At Pond Hobby we highly recommend the use of Blanket Answer as it is a non toxic, non chemical treatment for blanket weed and algae. This is a bacterial treatment that feeds on the algae in the pond, it is by far one of our best sellers here in store!!

Remember, maintaining a balanced ecosystem is crucial for long-term control of string algae. Regular maintenance practices, such as removing debris, managing fish populations, and monitoring water quality, contribute to overall pond health and help prevent excessive algae growth.
